During a family crisis like separation or divorce, children may be afraid or unable to express their concerns and needs to their parents, service providers or to each other. We, therefore, offer the services of a Child Ombudsman. He or she is a professional who represents the child’s interests in a family dispute or crisis.

FLP’s Child Ombudsmen are unbiased, third-party professionals who strive to understand children’s needs and concerns, and to assess their mental health. They ensure that the children’s views are heard and taken into account when a decision is made. They also act as an advocate to ensure that each child’s rights and interests are protected, and that the children have access to the services they require.

Family Law Professionals recommends the assignment of a Child Ombudsman when:

  1. The parental relationship is adversarial.
  2. Parents and children cannot communicate effectively or adequately on their own.
  3. Parents feel it is in the best interest of their children to have third party representation to ensure open and honest communication.

The assignment of a Child Ombudsman is voluntary.
